The TCM (Transmission Control Module) is responsible for transmission operation and control. When it malfunctions, the engine won’t start or develop nominal power. The module is very reliable, and its failures are very rare. The malfunction manifests in different ways. Standard defect manifestations are practically non-existent. Before condemning the TCM module to replacement, proper diagnostics must be performed. Generally, the cause of malfunction is not in the control module, but in the wiring and sensors.
The clutch slips while driving. When you engage the automatic transmission, during torque transfer to the drive through the transmission, the shaft moves along its axis, accordingly decreasing or increasing rotational power. This process is controlled by the TCM module, so if it fails, the clutch may slip: the disc slides past the splines, and the vehicle begins to move in jerks.
If you notice one or more of the above signs, hurry to take your vehicle to a specialized auto service center.
When connecting diagnostics, error codes show up for solenoids, slippage, incorrect gear ratios, etc. Hence, must be checked CAN voltage and CAN oscillogram. Based on the obtained data, try to determine the cause. Usually, vehicle wiring may be faulty, CAN damaged. Common wiring damage locations are:
High temperature and low wire quality cause insulation to crack and crumble. The wiring is housed in corrugated sleeves, making it impossible to see damage without completely disassembling the wiring harness. Usually, wiring faults begin to manifest as constant error codes registered by the TCM control module. In this case, unqualified vehicle repair creates additional man-made damage, especially while attempting to remove EGR.
Troubleshooting:
Often, constant gear ratio errors are mistaken for TCM block malfunction. The car accelerates normally up to 3rd-4th gear, then falls into error and continues in emergency mode only in 3rd gear, while limiting engine torque. Upon inspection, it may be discovered that the transmission was replaced with a similar one that looks identical externally but has different internal gear ratios. The only solution in this case is replacing the transmission with a new one or a used one but having the correct gear ratio.
