Transmission gets hot

The transmission has numerous moving elements which, when rubbing against each other, can generate a large amount of heat energy. For cooling the moving parts of the transmission, special transmission oil is used. It simultaneously cools and lubricates the moving elements. Problems with the lubrication system invariably lead to an increase in the operating temperature of the transmission. In this case, the coolant temperature can reach 120 degrees or more, at which the lubricant loses its properties and increased wear of the transmission begins.

Causes of overheating

The most common cause of transmission overheating is insufficient pressure of the liquids in the cooling system. This occurs due to insufficient oil levels or problems with the transmission oil pump. The driver needs to closely monitor the oil level in the transmission and replace it when necessary. Cooling problems can appear due to improper operation of solenoids. They effectively act as electric valves in the lubrication and cooling system. When necessary, a corresponding signal is sent to the solenoid, the valve opens, and oil flows to the moving elements, lubricating and cooling them. Also, transmission overheating can be caused by problems with the oil heat exchanger. This often happens when the heat exchanger is contaminated, its cells clogged with wear products, which prevents hot oil from the transmission from cooling effectively in the heat exchanger, leading to an inevitable temperature increase.

Treatment and Prevention: Main Directives

The degree of heating of the housing can be determined by touch. If you can calmly keep your hand on the transmission housing for several seconds, its temperature does not exceed the limit norms. In such cases, it is necessary to check the quality of the oil in the transmission. If metal particles are visually noticeable in the oil, the transmission needs to be sent for repair.

  • Important: After any intervention in the transmission, it is necessary to change the oil.

If the oil level is not as specified by the manufacturer, heating of the transmission is also possible. Typically, the oil level can be checked through a control hole that is closed with a bolt or plug. If the oil reaches the specified point, it is normal. Because lubricant is practically not consumed in this unit, if the level drops, you should look for a leak.

Shaft bearings may seize. If this happens, you need to check all the nuts that secure the bearings for tightness. It is necessary to make sure whether they are worn out or not.

If the bearings look normal visually, the problem is in the shafts. In this case, they need to be replaced only in an auto service.nsmission, feel free to contact us for advice and service.
