About AMT

The Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) is a fairly reliable unit that differs significantly in design and operating principle from a traditional automatic transmission. The device has a long service life, but like any other transmission, it has its drawbacks. To avoid costly repairs and restoration work during vehicle operation, we recommend familiarizing yourself with common AMT malfunctions and their signs.

All failures related to the “robot” transmission can be divided into two major groups. The first includes malfunctions that occur due to mechanical damage. For example, this happens due to “oil starvation” or lack of maintenance. The second group includes failures that occur due to electronic control unit malfunction.

Signs of AMT Malfunction

If your vehicle is equipped with an AMT transmission, don’t ignore the following signs (they most likely indicate problems with the transmission):

  • A warning light appears on the dashboard indicating transmission malfunction. If this happens while driving, you need to stop and determine the cause. Driving with a faulty transmission can only increase transmission wear.
  • Oil is leaking from the transmission. This can usually be determined by a rapid decrease in lubricant volume or by drops under the vehicle.
  • Various sounds coming from the transmission area, such as noise, grinding, squealing, knocking, etc.
  • Gears shift with difficulty, and sometimes become completely locked.
  • Gears shift automatically without human intervention.

If any of these “symptoms” are detected, you should schedule a comprehensive diagnostic inspection.

Common AMT Problems

Vehicle owners with AMT transmission often complain about the following unit malfunctions:

  • Gears automatically shift to neutral position, causing the vehicle to stop. This problem occurs during steady driving, and its cause is the failure of release bearings. Repairs usually don’t take much time: it’s sufficient to replace the damaged components.
  • Clutch slippage. In 99% of cases, the cause of this malfunction is wear of the driven disc. It cannot be repaired anymore. The replacement can be done independently. However, if you lack experience, it’s better to contact a workshop.
  • Jerking is observed when starting movement. This behavior indicates actuator failure. The component needs to be removed and inspected. If the damage is minor, perform repairs. If repair is not possible, the part should be completely replaced.

Almost all automated manual transmission malfunctions occur for the following reasons:

  • Wear of transmission components due to expired service life or simple lack of maintenance.
  • Violation of operating conditions. For example, towing heavy loads, off-road driving, aggressive driving style.

Repair Works

Specialized auto repair shops restore automated manual transmissions. Generally, worn and damaged parts cannot be restored, so they are replaced with new ones. Visual diagnostics of the transmission after its removal and disassembly will show which parts are worn:

  • clutch discs and clutch basket must be replaced as an assembly
  • the mechatronic unit is also replaced with a new one
  • hydraulic unit operation can be restored by flushing it, however, if this element is damaged, it is replaced with a new one
  • flywheel, forks, mounts, seals, filters – cannot be restored

If the transmission housing is damaged, specialists recommend installing a new unit or a restored remanufactured transmission. After repairs, mandatory transmission relearning is performed. This procedure is necessary to synchronize the engine and AMT operation. The robot must “remember” at which engine RPM it should upshift or downshift. This adaptation has three main stages:

  1. Resetting existing transmission control unit settings
  2. Learning gear shifting
  3. Adaptation of the clutch and ECM module

Depending on the model and manufacturer of the automated manual transmission, the calibration process may differ, but in any case, the work must be performed by specialists.
