Signs of Suspension Problems & When to Act

Wheels and the bearing system in a vehicle are connected through the suspension. Suspension problems arise when driving on poor-quality roads, and an aggressive driving style also negatively affects the suspension condition. Safety, quality, and driving comfort can only be ensured when the suspension is in proper working condition. This is why suspension quality check must be done more frequently than scheduled vehicle maintenance. Suspension inspection and repair should be done promptly if you notice:

  • uneven rear axle wheels
  • visually lowered ground clearance
  • strange, unusual sounds in the lower part of the vehicle
  • difficulty in vehicle control, frequent skidding

Suspension Inspection

Before beginning suspension repair, it’s necessary to identify the failure and damaged parts that need replacement. Diagnostics can be performed in your own garage using a pit or at a service station. At a service station, there will be an opportunity to check the suspension for play using special equipment. Sometimes, longer diagnostics may be needed to identify unusual noises. Self-diagnosis should begin with visual inspection and parts checking. Pay attention to:

  • vehicle response when rocking
  • vehicle movement behavior
  • heating with and without load

When inspecting the front wheel suspension area, pay special attention to parts that wear out faster than others, namely:

  • fasteners and their wear condition
  • ball joints
  • silent blocks
  • constant velocity joints (CV joints)
  • steering knuckle

CV Joints

Steering rods, protective boots, and joint inserts – all these elements are checked for damage and chips. It’s also necessary to determine the presence and size of play – this can be checked manually. Check how much the tie rod ends move. Maximum allowable movement is 1.5mm. If higher, it’s a defect. If steering wheel vibration or stiff rotation is felt, this indicates a steering rod defect. Shock absorbers can be easily checked. First, check for fluid leakage and play. If the vehicle model is relatively new, simply rocking the car will make its behavior clear. For older vehicles, the shock absorber must be removed for inspection. The spring assembly should also be inspected.

The first coils and the strut mount often wear out. Stabilizer bars should be checked for deformation and defects. The bar should be positioned in a single plane. Bushings and control arms need inspection. Check for defects and the presence of cracks and chips.

Connection seals should be checked for defects and tears. Rear suspension inspection will be significantly simpler as it has fewer parts. Similar to the front, check the connection seals and shock absorbers.

Front Suspension Repair

Shock absorbers are rarely repaired. When worn, they’re usually replaced immediately as it’s more cost-effective. Typically, shock absorbers are replaced in pairs – meaning those on the same axle. Bolts, rubber elements, and bushings are also replaced. If a spring fails, it can also be replaced immediately. Springs can be replaced individually. Loose fasteners can also be tightened.

Paired Strut Replacement

With prolonged use of a vehicle with a broken boot, the entire joint will need replacement. This is due to dirt and water infiltration. If boot damage is noticed immediately, it needs cleaning and a new boot installation. Also, it must be lubricated before this. Often, upper part failure is related to damage to the suspension handle reinforcement elements. A damaged arm needs replacement. The handle also needs replacement if the joint breaks. If the mount itself is attached with bolts, it can be dismounted and replaced. If the problem is only in the bushings, they can be replaced without replacing the entire arm.

Paired Strut Replacement

When defects are identified and repair is needed, worn or broken parts must be replaced. If the rear axle housing is damaged, it must be replaced. If the stabilizer bar is partially or minimally damaged, the defect can be fixed. However, if it has major damage, it must be replaced too. In almost all cases, suspension repair involves replacing worn parts. Repair costs can be significantly reduced by purchasing used parts. Complete compatibility of all replaced parts is crucial. All repair and installation procedures will vary depending on the model being repaired. For example, Ford strut repair will differ significantly from Nissan strut repair. Delaying suspension repairs can lead to cascading problems and expensive fixes. Faulty suspension affects handling, braking distance, and tire wear. Small issues can quickly escalate into major repairs if ignored, compromising safety during emergency maneuvers or bad weather.
