Types of Transmission

Depending on the degree of driver involvement, the “gearbox” can be manually operated (mechanical) or automatic, where gear selection is performed by electronics. These units typically include not only classic hydromechanics but also “robotic” elements and CVTs (Continuously Variable Transmission).

Manual Transmission

The simplest and most reliable type of transmission in operation. Visually, it's easy to identify a manual transmission: by the third pedal (clutch pedal) and gear shift lever. In modern cars, there can be 5, 6, or even 7 gears, plus neutral position and reverse mode.

Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT)

A classic automatic transmission usually refers to a hydromechanical gearbox. In this case, the driver has only two pedals, and instead of a gear lever, there's a selector that can be in the form of a dial or buttons, or a steering column gear selector with modes: P - park, D - drive, N - neutral, and R - reverse. The more advanced version that is capable of automatic change through a continuous range of gear ratios is called CVT. While having no individual gears, CVT provides a flawless driver experience and allows smoother shifts from one gear to the next.

Robotized Transmission

A robotized transmission or simply "robot" is a hybrid of automatic and manual gearboxes. To start moving, the driver, just like with an automatic gearbox, selects one of the modes (D, P, N, R).

Automatic transmissions

A classic automatic transmission has a torque converter, which replaces the clutch mechanism of a manual transmission, smoothly shifting gears without any driver intervention. A calmer driving experience, efficiency, and practicality are the advantages of automatic transmissions. The main disadvantage of this type is the excessively high cost and expensive repairs.

Signs of transmission failure

Manual Transmission:

  • A grinding sound when shifting gears may indicate a clutch that’s not fully disengaging or broken synchronizer sleeves in the gearbox.
  • Spontaneous gear disengagement could be caused by a faulty drive mechanism or worn shift forks.
  • Vibrations in the body when the engine is running due to loose bolts or worn gearbox mounts.

CVT Transmission:

  • Slipping off the CVT may be related to wear of the belt (or chain, depending on the transmission design), problems with the cone compression mechanism, or insufficient pressure in the hydraulic system.
  • Jerking during acceleration is most often associated with improper operation of the control module or electromagnetic valves.
  • If the car jerks during steady movement, the problem is likely due to wear of the belt or cones.

Robotized Transmission:

  • Jolts during gear changes, as well as jerking when starting to move, primarily indicate clutch wear.
  • When the gas pedal is pressed, the engine speed increases, but the car gains speed slowly – this is a sign of slippage of an excessively worn clutch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many things can lead to transmission failure, but high temperature is the number one culprit. When the transmission gets too hot, its parts can wear out and fail.

Replacing a transmission rather than repairing it often makes sense due to the complexity and time required for diagnostics and repairs. A full replacement can be more cost-effective and reliable, as it avoids the risks of partial repairs and ensures all components are in good condition. Additionally, replacements generally come with warranties that repairs might not, and not all mechanics have the specialized skills needed for intricate repairs. Overall, replacing the transmission can be a more straightforward and dependable solution.

The transmission is just as technically complex an element of the car as the internal combustion engine. Its replacement requires knowledge of certain nuances: for example, the transmission should only be removed when the engine is cold, if the car is rear-wheel drive, the driveshaft needs to be disconnected, and after replacing the transmission itself, proper break-in is necessary. The slightest mistake when replacing these units can be fatal for the car as a whole.
